Why do most North Africans not consider themselves to be Middle Eastern? In the present day, North Africa does indeed have many similarities with the neighboring region of Southwest Asia, as after the Arab-Islamic conquests the vast majority of North Africa became Arabic-speaking and converted to Islam however there are still many cultural and genetic differences between the two regions that distinguish them in the present day. Most regions of North Africa have different indigenous people groups such as the Amazigh/Berbers, Egyptians and Nubians and have many ties to Southern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa. Although some North Africans may identify as Middle Eastern the majority do not and may take offense at callous generalizations such as this. I try to use the term Middle Eastern & North African (MENA) when discussing this larger group.
