When inspiration strikes and I get busy with the music, things like this come out of it. This was a big #2 pop hit that really defines that moment in time and it was Michael Jackson solo back in 1972. This is the Micheal I miss the most, I believe that this part of him was always there, even to the end. His uncanny ability to reach you with his voice and make you feel things like the exuberance of youth that he extols in his version of "Rockin' Robin". Originally recorded by Bobby Day in 1958, it also peaked at #2, giving the song the distinction of being the ONLY song ever to have peaked at #2 twice by two different artists. Sure, there were plenty of #1 hits that had covers that also peaked at #1 like Little Eva's "Locomotion" that was covered by Grand Funk Railroad who also took it to #1. Chubby Checker's The Twist hit #1 in 1960 and then again in 1961, setting his own record with that feat with the exact same song. In 1970 the corporate plan for the Jackson 5 was to promote five new artists. Michael was encouraged by Berry Gordy to go solo and his first single the "Got To Be There" was a #4 pop hit. Michael second solo single was "Rockin' Robin" and it spent two weeks at #2 under Roberta Flack's six week reigning mammoth hit "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Michael was accused of going "lightweight" for this one. The rhythm track is smokin' and Michael wails up a storm, actually not much differently than "ABC" or "I Want You Back". Around this time, Michael took to entering the stage with the same hat he wore on his album cover, explaining "the audience will make the connection and go wild" and he was right. His manager thought it was a stupid idea but Michael already knew how to endear himself to you. Michael also set a record for having 2 #2 chart hits, one as a solo artist and the second with the Jackson 5, becoming the second artist to EVER do so behind Len Barry who had a solo #2 hit with "1-2-3" and as his part of the Dovells whose "Bristol Stomp" also hit #2. There he goes again making music history at such an early age. You probably noticed a lot of 2's here, but one thing for sure, Michael was never second best, he truly is the one and only King Of Pop.
