If your bank account gets debited but the merchant has not received the payment then what should you do? Well, in most cases the amount gets reversed, but in some cases you might have to reach your bank and raise a complaint. RBI has given stipulated auto reversal timelines and compensation; in case the card is debited but confirmation is not received: 1. If confirmation is not received by the e-commerce merchant’s system, then auto reversal should be done within the next 5 working days, or else banks need to pay ₹ 100/- per day for the delay 5th day. 2. If there’s no charge slip generated at a Merchant’s (POS) terminal, the auto reversal should be done within the next 5 working days and any delay beyond that will lead to ₹ 100/- per day of delay compensation. Also, If the amount is debited by your bank and confirmed by the payment gateway but the order is not created, then banks cannot help in the reversal of the amount as the transaction is considered successful. You’ll have to then coordinate with the merchant. Now, here if the mistake is of your bank you will receive the compensation. However, If the your account is debited and the beneficiary has not received the money in the stipulated time, the penalty will be paid to the them and not us. If the banks fail to resolve the issue within 1 month, you can escalate the issue to the RBI Ombudsman under Reserve Bank - Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021.
