Hello everyone and welcome to the Fashion &… Book Club where I discuss and recommend fashion books that are essential reading for any fashion aficionado! This week’s Fashion &… Book Club choice is Fashion in Colors published by Assouline to accompany the exhibition of the same name curated by Akiko Fukai, Director and Chief Curator at the Kyoto Costume Institute. Shown between 2005 and 2006 at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, Fashion in Colors focused on the elements of colour in clothing from the 17th to the 21st centuries. The exhibition was arranged in five sections according to colour — Black, Multicolour, Blue, Red & Yellow, and White. By arranging the exhibition in this way, the curator was able to produce a clear picture of the characteristics of each piece of clothing, bringing to the forefront the rich symbolism and importance of colour. This publication features original essays which discuss the effects and influences of colour on fashion and society by Japanese and Western fashion scholars. The text is comprehensive, well-written and illustrated with rich and vibrant full colour photographs. Fashion in Colors’ examination of colour in the history and aesthetics of fashion is both daring and illuminating! This is a fantastic book that not only explores the relationship between colour theory and fashion but also gives us glimpse of the amazing collections of Japan’s Kyoto Costume Institute.
