I've never watched the super bowl but I always analyse the commercials. Reddit's 5 second spot was declared by nytimes.com as the unlikely winner and I have to agree. The Northwestern University’s business school reported "Reddit’s commercial was among the most effective commercials of the broadcast. The Kellogg School’s list measures the execution of the commercial, the quality of the attention it generates, its memorability and other factors." Reddit’s chief marketing officer, Roxy Young said “I just didn’t think that we could come together with 30 seconds of beautifully produced material — but I was confident that we could do something in five seconds.” For those of you wondering, the cost for 30 seconds this year was $5.5 million — that's $915k for 5 seconds to reach 100 million people. Reddit became popular last month when one of it's forums inflated the GameStop stock to where one hedge fund required a $2.75 billion bailout from investors. And that was the message of the add: “One thing we learned from our communities last week is that underdogs can accomplish just about anything when they come together around a common idea” I believe marketing is at it's best when it says the most with the least. Not bad Reddit. Not bad at all.
