Set up automatic payments so you don't miss any payments. 3. Keep your credit utilization low. It's recommended you use no more than 10% of your overall credit limit. But the lower, the better. With that said, I kept my utilization below 1-2%, and that made a bigger difference when my score was calculated. You don't necessarily start with a 0 credit score when you don't have any credit. It's nonexistent. Most of the time, your credit score develops six months after opening your first ever line of credit. My score was around 680 at the time. After eight months of using my secured card while following these rules, Discover told me they were going to graduate my card to an unsecured card, increase my credit limit (by A LOT) and return my security deposit.
