Sarah Goodale is a research assistant and former participant in VISE Summer Undergraduate program in the Brain Imaging and Electrophysiology Network (BIEN) Lab under the direction of Dr. Dario Englot. The lab is currently working on a project where Dr. Englot implants electrodes in the brain of an epilepsy patient to record brain activity. After surgery, BIEN members visit patients in the hospital to monitor brain activity. Unlike other imaging tools which allow one to see the outside of the brian, this allows doctors to see what is happening inside the brain. The information collected helps doctors and researchers better understand how epilepsy affects the person as a whole. The Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE) is an interdisciplinary, trans-institutional entity designed to bring engineers and physicians together to impact healthcare.
