Quite often locums assignments bring you to communities where you’re truly needed and appreciated. Dr. Michaela Sakumura says that appreciation really makes a difference. Transcript: I think what’s really nice is when you show up as a physician in places that are understaffed, and the staff likes you and they appreciate you and they really want you to come back. Last time I was in this small town in New Mexico where you’re the single coverage doctor, you’re the only person there really in town that’s a physician. And I got a note on my sweatshirt, like I had been resting in the physician call room overnight, but I woke up, and the night shift nurses had already left, but I had a note pinned to my jacket that was out there that just said, “You know, we really loved working with you. Hope you come back soon.” It’s just those little moments in personal interaction with people that just makes you appreciative of meeting new people and going new places.
