When investing on Vanguard's UK platform, there are many similar ETFs and index funds, but which is best? Many of the funds invest in similar markets, hold similar companies and have similar ongoing charges. In this video, we analyse some of the top ETFs and top index funds on the platform, to determine which type of fund is the best. The funds are first compared based on the number of stocks they hold and the ongoing charges. Each fund is then analysed further to determine how well diversified they are and to identify the advantages of each type of fund. The general characteristics of each type of fund is also discussed, which includes the fractional share behaviour and the dividend distribution style. Index funds are generally more favourable when considering these two factors. However, ETFs generally have a lower cost than their index fund counterpart. Picking a winner for each type of fund was difficult but we are confident with the final decisions. We hope the thought process behind the choices is clearly conveyed and that you understand the decisions that were made. If you disagree with our thoughts we'd love to hear your opinion!
