Where we go wrong as Physios when considering exercise for people with widespread pain and fibromyalgia, is that we stick to tissue-based exercises, as this is what we’ve been taught and know. However, in fibromyalgia there isn’t any damage affecting the actual joints/muscles, but rather a sensitisation of the nervous system as a whole that leads to pain being felt in different parts of the body. So rather than targeting specific body parts, we need to focus on the person as a whole and that’s where values-based exercise comes in.
