#Grafted (2024): 6.5/10 Director: Sasha Rainbow Runtime: 96mins ⠀ Sasha Rainbow’s Grafted is a pulpy, campy ick fest reminiscent of the likes of ‘Face/Off’ and very recent hit ‘The Substance’. It sees Chinese exchange student Wei (Joyena Sun) attempt to further her father’s research at her New Zealand college into a rare skin condition they share after he tragically passes. ⠀ Wei arrives in New Zealand extremely low on self-confidence, with her facial birthmark a clear mental hindrance - really not helped by her interactions with estranged cousin Angie (Jess Hong) and her cooler, conventionally perfect friends. Sun builds Wei’s vitriolic tendencies gradually, but things quickly spiral out of control once the first blow is dealt. ⠀ Grafted does owe a debt to 1960’s French body horror classic ‘Eyes Without A Face’, and whilst its plot ends up leaning too much into silliness without much in the way of consequence by the end, it’s still a solid body horror entry, and a nice companion piece to Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’. ⠀ Have you seen Grafted?
