Did you know that for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, viewers can keep track of what phase of the relationship Joel and Clementine are in by using Kate Winslet’s hair. Green hair for their first meeting, red for the fantasy scenes, orange for affairs, and blue for their re-acquaintance. The hair color changes were done with wigs and not hair dye. When Joel pours Clementine a drink and says “Sorry, I thought there was more,” he’s remembering the amount he had prior to getting the procedure done, during which the staff helped themselves to his liquor. Joel claims that he cannot make eye contact with a woman he doesn’t know, but when meeting Clementine again after having his memory of her erased, he makes eye contact showing that his memory of her wasn’t completely gone. In this scene, where Joel is observing himself meeting with the doctor, no digital effects were used. Jim Carrey ran back and forth behind the camera, putting the hat and coat on and off to play different versions of himself. Everyone in the movie was encouraged to improvise, except for Carrey, because his character was reserved and not spontaneous. Carrey would get frustrated as everybody around him cut loose, while all the while he was being told “this is a drama, not a comedy.”
