It’s a great time to spring into food gardening – and growing from seed is the best option for many staples, like carrots, corn and coriander. Little seeds, like those of basil, only need to be under a sprinkle of soil, while the bigger ones, like peas and beans, will need to be a few centimetres deep. Seeds that grow into bigger plants will need more space between them too. That means you can plant lettuces close together but tomatoes and pumpkins will need a bigger gap between them, so they’re not competing with their neighbours for water, nutrients and sunlight. Once you’ve planted your seeds, it’s important to water them every morning and then again in the evening if it has been sunny.
