Short selling: Short selling of stocks is a strategy used when you expect that the price of a security will decline. It is the opposite of the traditional way of trading that is “buy low and sell high”. To sell short, you sell shares of a security you do not own. These shares are borrowed from the broker believing that the price will decline, and they can purchase at a lower price to return those stocks to the broker. First the position is opened by borrowing the shares which you want to sell, and the position is closed when you buy back the shares and return them to the broker. Of course, you can make a profit when the prediction or the belief is turned out to be true and the prices of shares have declined, and you bought the shares at a lower price than selling price. There are 3 steps in short selling: 1. While placing the sell order, one must select the option MIS( Margin Intraday square up) which will tell the system that the order is a short sell order. 2. Intraday order entails the payment of margins. 3. Short selling orders needs to be closed within the same day. Benefits and risks in the short selling: It allows you to make profit on th e stock even if you don’t own it. If you have shares in your demat account, it can be used as margin to short sell. Shorting stocks can be inherently volatile, it can also increase as you want to close the position. Short sellers run the risk of borrowed stock being recalled by their broker when the short seller has limited control on the price of covering their position.
