As a resident of Bangkok I've explored the city and visited most of the tourist hotspots. Some attractions are must see and offer great value for money whilst others are worth a miss or are too expensive. I've created my top ten recommended places for visitors to Bangkok who are looking to explore the city in a few days and get a wide variety of cultural experiences and to see typical life of Thai people. 1. Street Food 2. Sky Bar Experience 3. Chinatown 4. Muay Thai Boxing 5. Bangkok Art & Culture Centre 6. Green Lung 7. Lumphini Park 8. Bamboo Bar (Mandarin Oriental Hotel) 9. Chatuchak Market 10. Chao Phraya Sunset Dinner Cruise Street Food vendors are available all over the city in particular in tourist hotspots. The food is usually very tasty and great value for money. Some vendors sell more exotic regional foods whilst the old favourites such as Pad Thai, Meat Skewers, Noodle Soup and Tom Yum are widely available throughout the city. If you want to taste authentic food eaten by local people each day then avoid the restaurants and eat at the street food carts. You'll find many excellent street food vendors in the following locations: Silom, Chinatown (Yaowarat), Victory Monument, Sukhumvit, Bangrak, Asok and Sam Yan. Bangkok is not short of sky bars offering places to eat, drink and relax with spectacular views of the city. Personally I prefer views of the Chao Phraya River particularly at sunset offered at Sirocco (State Tower, Bangrak) although cocktail prices here are eye watering. Other rooftop bars to consider are located at Vertigo, Banyan Tree, Sathorn, Above Eleven, Sukhumvit soi 11, Octave, Marriott Hotel, Sukhumvit, Zoom Skybar, Anantara, Sathorn, Red Sky, Centara Grand, Siam and Blue Sky, Centara Grand, Lat Prao. Chinatown (Yaowarat) is one of the most interesting and overwhelming places to visit in Bangkok. Colourful narrow alleys, authentic Chinese temples and a wide variety of food options make this area a compelling attraction when visiting the city. The bustling streets and chaos add to the charm of thr area. I personally prefer to visit early evening when it is still possible to walk and not queue too long for your favourite delicacies. An evening watching Thailand's national sport at one of the two major stadiums in Bangkok is well worth experiencing when visiting the city. You can book a ticket on any day of the week at one of these two venues offering an insight into this traditional and much loved combat sport. An adrenaline fuelled evening at the Muay Thai Boxing is a fun activity to experience at least once. The Bangkok Art & Culture Centre offers a wide range of artworks and photography from artists all over the world. This venue is free to enter and provides a few hours of culture in the comfort of air conditioned galleries. Exhibits are changed frequently so this is a place to keep coming back to. Bang Krachao known as Bangkok's Green Lung is best explored by bike. This area is a fantastic place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. At the weekend ensure that you visit Bang Nam Pheung Floating Market which has stalls offering a variety of souvenirs, clothing and food. Sri Nakhorn Kuan Khan Park is also worth visiting for a tranquil walk or ride around the forested area. I'm a regular visitor to Lumphini Park located in Bangkok's business district and it truly is a green oasis in the heart of the city. It is a popular park and gets busy particularly at weekends however it is big enough to find a quiet area if you want to. The park is famous for the 400 or so water monitor lizards which make the park their home. Get dressed up for a sophisticated evening sipping award winning cocktails and listening to cool jazz music at the Bamboo Bar. Located in the 5 star Mandarin Oriental Hotel which sits on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. This is an absolute favourite way to spend an evening in the city. Chatuchak Market is a great place to search out those souvenirs but don't forget to haggle to ensure that you get a bargain. Hundreds of stalls make this a one stop shop for your needs and the added bonus is that there are plenty of tasty food options to choose from as well. A dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya River offers a different prospective of the city and some of Bangkok's most famous tourist attractions. A relaxing trip along the river and a tasty buffet ensures that you'll have a great evening cruising through the city. Starting and finishing at Icon Siam there are several boats to choose from.
