If you are thinking of coming to Mexico, I am going to give you some small tips about what to do, and what not to, in Mexico. Don't arrive too soon or on time when someone invites you to their home. As odd as it may seem, this is considered rude. Present yourself around 15 minutes after the agreed upon hour. Offer your hand when you see someone. Between friends, it is more common to give a hug, or even, a light kiss on the cheek with women. Don't use clothing or jewelry that is expensive or extravagant; or carry a large amount of money with you. Typically, foreigners are the preferred target for thieves and pick-pocketers, so try not to attract too much attention. Leave a tip between 10% and 20% for services that you hire. Not doing so is considered extremely rude. Don't use words like "NO" or "I don't know," if you don't want to offend someone or make them feel betrayed. Instead, invent an excuse and say "thank you" repeatedly. Learn some Spanish. The majority of Mexicans don't speak or understand English. Even though there are some places such as Puerto Vallarta where due to tourism and retired people from Canada and the U.S, English is spoken often. Make photocopies of your passport and give copies to your family or someone you trust, carry a copy with you always, and keep your passport in a safe place. And if you need to move somewhere, always try to make sure that your passport and copy are not in the same place. Elengorn Realtors is an independent real estate agency in Puerto Vallarta.
