Forest Survey of India (FSI) comes under Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change. Objectives of FSI: To present Indian State of Forest Report(ISFR). Other Points: ISFR is a biennial publication. Forest survey started in INDIA in 1987. The latest report is 16th. Remote sensing satellites are used for assessing the forests. FSI did not present report in 2007. A canopy is a layer of something that spreads out and covers an area, for example the branches and leaves that spread out at the top of trees in a forest. Forest Cover:“All lands, more than one hectare in area with a tree canopy density of more than 10%”. 1 Hectare = 0.01 square Km All tree stands with canopy density over 10% and having an extent of more than one hectare, including tree orchards, bamboo, palms etc within recorded forests,on other governmental lands, private, community or institutional lands are included in the assessment of forest cover. Tree cover:Is defined as “tree patches outside recorded forest areas exclusive of forest cover and less than the minimum mappable area of 1 hectare”. Total Forest and Tree Cover rises to 24.56 percent of the total geographical area of the Country. Forest and Tree cover has increased by more than 13 Lakhs hectares in the last four years. Out of this, the increase in the forest cover has been observed as 3,976 sq km and that in tree cover is 1,212 sq. km. National Forest Policy of India,1988:The policy envisages a goal of achieving 33% of Geographical area of the country under forest and tree cover. Forest Cover in Tribal Districts: Forests play an important role in the socio-cultural and economic life of the tribal people. There are 218 tribal districts in 27 States/UTs as identified by the GoI under Integrated Tribal Development Programme. There is an over all increase in forest cover in the tribal districts by 1,181 square km. Mangrooves:A tree or shrub which grows in tidal, chiefly tropical, coastal swamps, having numerous tangled roots that grow above ground and form dense thickets. The Mangrove ecosystems are unique & rich in biodiversity and they provide numerous ecological services. Mangrove cover has been separately reported in the ISFR 2019 and the total mangrove cover in the country is 4,975 sq km. An increase of 54 sq Km in mangrove cover has been observed as compared to the previous assessment of 2017.  Bamboo:The extent of bamboo bearing area of the country has been estimated 16.00 million hectare. There is an increase of 0.32 million hectare in bamboo bearing area as compared to the last assessment of ISFR 2017. Under the current assessment the total carbon stock in country’s forest is estimated 7,124.6 million tonnes and there an increase of 42.6 million tonnes in the carbon stock of country as compared to the last assessment of 2017. Wetlands:Due to importance of wetlands, FSI has carried out an exercise at the national level to identify wetlands of more than 1 ha within RFA.  There are 62,466 wetlands covering 3.8% of the area within the RFA/GW of the country. Questions Based on VIDEO LECTURE.:1)When was First Forest Report released by FSI ? 2)How many forest reports have been released till date by FSI? 3)What is total forest Cover of INDIA. 4) National Forest Policy of India,1988 aims to achieve what % of Forest+ Tree Cover. 5) Total Forest and Tree Cover according to 16th report is_________%? 6)Name the state having largest forest area in India?
