As Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Kolkata before the eight-phase election in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took on his government by leading a "padayatra" in Siliguri to protest against the steep hike in fuel prices, including cooking gas. Thousands of supporters, especially women, were seen holding cardboard replicas of LPG cylinders at the yatra. Claiming that LPG cylinders would soon be beyond the reach of the public, Ms Banerjee blamed this on a "syndicate" run by PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
