How big is 1 TB of data? 🐕 (or, the story of how my tenant used 1TB of data streaming all-day 4K resolution dog TV) My tenant just ran out of her internet plan because for the last 20 days, she's been streaming all-day 4K resolution dog TV so her fur baby wouldn't get lonely. I tried explaining to her just how big a terabyte is- so let's talk data sizes! On the small end, we have a byte, and on the large end, petabyte. A byte is enough to store one letter- the word "hello" is 5 bytes. The next largest unit is megabyte (mb)- A Mb is enough to stream 1 minute of a podcast or download 1 email with a small attachment. 1000 Mb makes a gigabyte (Gb). Gb is probably how your phone plan is measured- it's enough to watch 20 minutes of a high-res show, or store 16 hours of music. 1000 Gb makes a terabyte (Tb). Tb is probably how your internet plan is measured- it's enough to store 250 movies, or stream 10 hours of 4k resolution dog TV for 20 days. 1000 Tb makes a petabyte (Pb). Pb are huge. The Library of Congress, for reference, is 20 Pb. Questions about data (or which dog TV show is the best)? DM me and let's chat!
