Before Columbus ever touched a ship, a Black Muslim named Estevanico had already made it to the Americas. Born in Morocco, Estevanico traveled with Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s, surviving shipwrecks, leading expeditions, translating languages, and building bridges with Native American tribes. He was one of the first non-Natives to explore parts of what is now the U.S.—decades before the Mayflower or Columbus. So why don’t we learn about him in school? Because history erases Black greatness. Black history isn’t separate—it’s American history. It’s time we told the full truth.
