It is surrounded by a fibrous capsule on the outside which holds the joint together. The movement of the shoulder includes: 1. Flexion (bringing the arm up) 2. Abduction (bringing the arm to the side) 3. External rotation (outward rotation) 4. Internal rotation (inward rotation) 5. Extension (reaching back) The 4 rotator cuff muscles: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor (see above) work together to stabilise the shoulder.
