At the same time I look to what was happening in Hollywood and how designers like Adrian, who designed the astonishing gown worn by Joan Crawford in Letty Lynton, influenced what real women wore. This was a time of anxiety and of austerity as the forces of war gathered momentum. Women escaped from an often grim reality by watching Hollywood films that tended to centre around emotional drama or musical extravaganzas. Now Hollywood was exerting a major influence on fashion, a rival to the world centre of fashion - Paris.
