SOUNDBITE (English), Remya Jose, inventor of pedal-operated washing machine "When I was in 10th standard (grade) there was no washing machine in my home. I had seen the function of the electric washing machine, so that was when I got an idea of how I could change electric power into mechanical power. I drew the pictures first and then got the idea of using pedals to change it into mechanical power." 9. Pan of Remya's family sitting around dining table 10. Remya sitting at dining table 11. Her school is 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) away but I said no - girls must practice washing by hand or by using a stone, as they have to move house when they get married and they may have a problem if there is no washing machine there. Then she took it as a challenge. She drew a diagram and I took the design to Pandikkad Industries and they made it according to the diagram." 14. SOUNDBITE (English) Remya Jose, inventor of pedal-operated washing machine : "In rural areas, it can be more useful. Also I think the main use is that with an ordinary electric machine, electric power is needed and also only one force cleans the clothes - the spinning motion of water. But here I use two forces - one is the spinning motion of water and the second is the beating effect. I think the second one is more effective. And also the cab inside the horizontal cylinder is giving protection to the clothes." 19. Various of cylinder rotating and clothes spinning inside Remya's washing machine 20. Now, an 18-year-old girl from Kerala has invented a pedal-operated washing machine that runs without electricity and instead uses pedal power. STORYLINE: Many people in rural areas of India have no access to electricity and even those who have access to this scarce resource have to suffer prolonged periods of outages or power cuts. This means that many of the household chores which are made easier by automatic machines in the developed world are still done by hand in India. But eighteen year old Remya Jose decided to take the hand work out of clothes washing, by creating a pedal powered machine. Engineering student Remya invented a pedal-operated washing machine.
