“What should I do for the rest of my life?” It's a question many high school and college students are often confronted with. Is it a fair question to ask? "It's ridiculous," says Phil Jones, dean of career development at Dickinson College. "For me, the question is: What are you going to do in the next 12 months? What are you going to do in the next 6 months?" Jones uses this approach to help students look for short term opportunities at the Dickinson College Career Center. "What's going to happen next summer? Next summer is certainly something you can deal with. Maybe not the rest of your life ... let's think about that rather than trying to deal with this enormous question, which is unrealistic in the first place, ‘What am I going to do for the rest of my life?’ "
