First, it's great for moving content from one site to another and second, it's good for import sample data for a premium theme. You can import CSV to WordPress or import Excel to WordPress, but you will need a plugin called WP All Import to make that work. There is great WP All Import Documentation for the plugin. The video above is strictly a WordPress XML import tutorial using the WordPress import plugin. Let's get to how to import XML to WordPress. To get to the import page all you have to do is hover over Tools in the left hand menu and select Import in the menu that pops up. You will be asked to select a website technology that you are importing from. In the case of this tutorial we are importing from another WordPress site. So we choose that option by clicking on it. If we don't yet have the WordPress Importer plugin installed a popup will appear prompting you to install the plugin. Install and activate it. Next, on the WordPress import page, you will be asked to browser for the XML file you want to import. Once you have found it click on Upload File And Import. On the following page you will be asked to Assign Authors. All of the content that is in the XML file can be attributed to the authors that are in the file or you can assign the content to a different author. You can also import attachments like pictures and PDFs by selecting the Import Attachments box. After that click on Submit and you import will process. Once the import process is finished you can see your import pages or posts in their respective areas. That's all there is to the WordPress XML Import process using the WordPress Importer plugin.
