In 1959, Hawaii became the fiftieth federal state of the United States of America. However, less than seventy years earlier it had existed as a prosperous and wholly independent sovereign country, the Kingdom of Hawaii. But the incorporation of Hawaii stands apart from the incorporation of the other states of the Union. First founded in 1810, the Kingdom of Hawaii had existed as a wholly independent country recognised by Britain, France and the United States. This lasted until 1893, when its last monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, was overthrown in a coup organised by powerful business interests and US officials. And yet, while the United States at first opposed union, in 1898, at a time of nationalist fervour in the USA, it occupied and annexed the islands, which then became the Territory of Hawaii. But it would be another sixty years before they would formally join the USA as a federal state.
