The Angles and Saxons were Germanic peoples from central/east Germany who came to Britain after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. This video discusses the history of the Anglo-Saxons and their interactions with Celtic peoples and the Norse and Danish Vikings. Maps are used to illustrate geographic holdings and cities. The eras surveyed include the fall of the Roman Empire to 1399, when King Henry summoned Parliament in English. Topics include Arthur and the Celtic resistance to Anglo-Saxon invasions, the success of Celtic Christianity in England, Viking invasions, King Offa, Alfred the Great, Northumbria's contributions to civilization, Beowulf, Old English cognates with modern English, and the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror.
