These were essentially parties where participants would inhale ether vapor for its intoxicating and hallucinating effects. A doctor, Crawford Williamson Long observed that people under the ethers effect would suffer falls and bumps without any apparent pain. In 1842 he used ether as a surgical anesthetic.
