NEW CARLISLE - They cut two deputies and now crime is up in New Carlisle, so folks are banding together to protect their streets.City Council voted to cut its deputies by half in January because of budget concerns. In order to get them back voters must pass a levy on the May ballot."It is up to your neighbors and people to watch each other and take care of each other," said New Carlisle resident Ninettie Gothard who was at a neighborhood watch meeting tonight.Raymond Lowrey who is on the New Carlisle City Council says they will be hitting the pavement trying to get support for the proposed 1/2 percent income tax increase. In the meantime he had some advice for residents concerned about crime."It's for us to take care of ourselves. Lock our doors, make sure there's lights on, make sure there's something going on in the house to make sure it looks like we're there. We need to protect ourselves," said Lowrey. In addition to encouraging people to vote yes for the levy in May this group discussed citizen policing. The sheriffs office is working with these guys to put an official group together.
