If you love Disney’s incredible animated series, “Gravity Falls,” then you probably know part of what makes it so special is that they let the creators include some edgier humor throughout the show. The series is still considered family friendly in the United States, but when Disney exports the show overseas, some changes get made along the way. Things that are totally a-ok in the US might not fly in other countries. That’s why animators remove symbols that could bring up unwelcome references, cut scenes with certain words and soften some mentions or images of violence. Most of these are fairly straightforward edits, but sometimes the editors need to get pretty creative to meet the needs of the international censors without totally changing the meaning of a line or plotpoint. Some of the things that get changed in other countries are to avoid offending international audiences, while other changes are made to help jokes land better or make more sense in different languages and cultures. The Mystery Shack and Mabel’s beloved pig pal “Waddles” both take on new names in almost every translation of the show. If you’re a fan of Gravity Falls and tracking down changes between different versions of the show, this is probably not the only animated series you love.
