VFIAX and VTSAX are so similar, but they also have a few differences. Both are great investment options! YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT WITH A PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL ADVISOR BEFORE MAKING ANY DECISIONS WITH YOUR MONEY So first up we will go over the differences of these two funds: Here you can see that they are the same in every category except number of stocks they own and the Dividend Yield. Their dividend yield difference is so minimal we’re not even going to look at that. We are just going to focus on their composition. So they Total stock market fund includes every single company on the NYSE whereas the 500 Index fund just includes the top 500. Here you can see that 75% of each fund is the same. The total stock fund just includes all of the small and mid-cap stocks of public companies in the US. The top 10 holdings in each of these funds are the exact same as you can see here. The additional roughly 3,100 shares of the Total stock market fund is made up of companies that are so tiny compared to the top 500. So ultimately both of these funds past performance have been very similar. Here you can see that most all the time they are within a percent of each other and since 1930 - 2013 they have both returned on average 9.7% annually. As far as I can see it is just personal preference which one of these you choose. I personally choose the 500 Index fund b/c that is what Warren Buffet suggests. But at the end of the day it probably won’t matter too much. By far the most important thing is just that you choose one and stick to it and invest consistently every month.
