According to legend, the body of Saint Mark was stolen from Alexandria, Egypt, and hidden in a barrel filled with pork to deter Muslim customs officials. This elaborate ruse allowed Venetians to bring the relics to Venice in eight twenty-eight A.D. In addition, The four bronze horses perched above the main entrance are famous worldwide. However, they are not the originals. The horses were looted from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204.
