Mikhail Tukhachevsky was born on 16 February 1893 in the village of Alexandrovskoye, located in the Smolensk region, then part of the Russian Empire.During the First World War, which began on 28 July 1914, Tukhachevsky fought against Austrians and Germans as part of the 1st Guards Division on the Western Front. Several months after the October Revolution, Tukhachevsky joined the Bolsheviks and the Red Army. Through his connections and exceptional ability, he rapidly advanced in rank. At just twenty-five years old, he was given command of the 5th Army. Tasked with defending Moscow during the Russian Civil War, which lasted from 1917 to 1923, he later led a campaign to capture Siberia from the anticommunist White forces, employing innovative tactics such as concentrated attacks and envelopment.Tukhachevsky played a decisive role in defeating General Anton Denikin, who led the anticommunist White forces in southern Russia. In February 1920, he launched an offensive into the Kuban region of the North Caucasus, using cavalry to disrupt the enemy's rear. Denikin's forces disintegrated during the retreat, leading to the hasty evacuation of Novorossiysk. Tukhachevsky also contributed to the final operations that defeated Denikin’s forces in the Crimea later that year.In 1933, Tukhachevsky received the Order of Lenin, the Soviet Union's highest honor. Simultaneously, he advanced within the Communist Party hierarchy, and in 1935, he became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Moreover, in November of the same year, at the age of 42, he was promoted to the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union alongside four other commanders. He is the youngest individual in the history of the Soviet Union to ever hold this rank.
