미세먼지와 황사 영향 큰 날씨... 보광기술 재배로 극복 Fine dust and yellow dust can affect the quality of plants grown through the winter and spring. To tackle this problem, more and more farms are using supplementary lighting to boost growth. Choi Won-jong went to Gwangju to check it out. Inside these greenhouses... roses and gerberas are about to bloom... right on time for this year's spring season. However, this farm noticed some challenges from the high levels of fine dust and yellow dust at the start of spring. "When there's a lack of sunlight... it takes a long time to grow plants like roses... and they are very fragile and more vulnerable to harmful insects." That's why this farm became the first in South Korea to adopt a supplementary sodium lighting system... to help plants get enough light. "These flowers need 4 to 5 hours of sunlight a day... but since a new lighting technology was brought in... cloudy weather and fine dust are no longer a concern." "By using this lighting system... even if temperatures are lower, the plants grow very well because they are exposed to extra light... and also the quality of plants gets better.. and the production level jumps by 15 to 20 percent." But they are not the only farm adopting this technology. According to Rural Development Administration... there were 34 places using this lighting in 2015. Three years later, this had jumped to 80 places. So... why are a growing number of farms using this lighting system? "During the period when daylight is shorter and fine dust levels are higher... the amount of sunlight is much lower than usual... meaning light penetration through the greenhouses becomes very weak when the facilities are covered with fine dust." The type of lighting being used by the farms is changing too. "In the past, supplementary lighting with high-pressure sodium was widely used, but now LED lights are much brighter and more efficient than the past... so many places use them in a mix." The RDA has been providing support for supplementary lighting. And... they are also providing a coating technology so fine dust doesn't attach to greenhouses easily... to stop fine dust from blocking sunlight.
