Two new dramas are currently on our screens, Balenciaga on Disney and The New Look on Apple TV. As yet I haven’t see either, but I’m immensely looking forward to watching them. Cristóbal Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Gabrielle Chanel are brought to life once more, along with a host of other key people in their lives. Last year I also saw Transatalantic on Netflix which features many costumes directly referencing Elsa Schiaparelli. In 2019 I was thrilled to see the Dior exhibition at the V & A and then in 2023 I was so lucky to be able to see the wonderful Schiaparelli exhibition in Paris. In this chat I look at each of these designers, designing and creating haute couture in Paris during the same time period. There of course is so much left out as each have fascinating stories to tell, this is such a brief touch on a subject that fascinates me. I forgot to mention the film Mrs Harris Goes to Paris which I greatly enjoyed and is also another wonderful peek into Dior’s world. If you’re interested in reading more about Dior’s sister Catherine, there is a book by Justine Picardie, Miss Dior, a story of courage and couture https://www.waterstones.com/book/miss-dior/justine-picardie/9780571356539 I hope you enjoy my video as I much as I love having you join me here.
