Engineers at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts staged the live exercise on Tuesday in a mock living room to show the potential for a Christmas tree to touch off a raging inferno (main). They used a freshly harvested Christmas tree that was left unwatered for three weeks in the room, recreating conditions that often occur after people decorate their homes for the holidays. After hitting the tree with a blowtorch, the lower branches quickly went up and the flames started to spread (top left) before the whole tree was ablaze at 38 seconds (bottom left).
