We just do catch and release so we try to do as little harm as possible when we noodle; so we just grab them by their lower lip and not their gills. And then once we get them out of the hole putting them in a landing net is a great way to cause as little stress as possible to the flathead or blue catfish. You'll get your hands torn up and basically get hundreds of paper cuts which is definitely not fun in the days following. So, I'd recommend wearing gloves when noodling big flathead catfish otherwise your hands will definitely sting for a day or two. You can get inexpensive gardening gloves or more expensive ones that are more durable.
