The double-decker was one of the vehicles which picked up students and teachers from Ban Dong Lop School in Nakhon Ratchasima to Pattaya, a seaside town on the east coast of Thailand. According to local newspaper the Nation, the coach rammed into a truck at around 5 a.m. when going downhill between Taplan and Khao Yai National Park. Authorities suspected that a brake malfunction might be the cause of the accident, but did not dismiss the possibility of the driver falling asleep. Local media reported that the driver had fled the scene after the fatal crash. At least 14 people, most of them students, were killed. 11 of them were pronounced dead at scene; another 14 were injured. The World Health Organisation said Thailand has a "much higher" death rate from traffic accidents, as traffic rules are often ignored and speeding is a common practice among drivers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation's News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health.
