New Zealand's parliament was temporarily suspended after a haka broke out in the public gallery following an MP's maiden speech. Te Pāti Māori MP Oriini Kaipara's speech was followed by a planned and approved Māori song to celebrate her arrival. As it came to a close, a man in the public gallery launched into a haka and was then joined by others. Speaker Gerry Brownlee interrupted and suspended the sitting. "No, not that. The guarantee was that would not be taking place," he said. Parliamentarians and political parties must get permission if they or their supporters want to sing or perform haka in the public gallery.
