Have you always wanted to work as a freelance model or actor in Japan? In this video, I tell you everything you need to know in order to start your modeling career as a model or actor in Tokyo, Japan. My instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattalex_/ Modeling: First, we need to know ‘’What is modeling?’’ A lot of people get really confused on the word modeling and right away think about fashion and catwalk. They believe that being a model is only possible if you have the most beautiful face and body. But this isn’t the case, in Japan, modeling is a very broad term. You can work as an actor, an extra, a model, a translator and many other types of jobs. Types of modeling agencies: There are roughly 3 categories of modeling agencies in Japan 1- Professional model agencies 2- Semi-pro / contract model agencies 3- Freelance agencies Here is a list of modeling agencies in Japan: Freelance: Echoes: http://www.echoes-tokyo.com/ Freewave: https://f-w.co.jp/en/ Avocado: https://www.avocado.co.jp/ Remix: http://remix-model.co.jp/ Lazaris: http://www.lazaris-net.com/ ISOP: https://isopm.co.jp/ Junes: https://www.junesmodels.com/sp/ YsC: http://models.ysc-inc.com/#/main Bayside: http://www.bay-side.biz/ Alpha Management: https://www.alphamanagement.co.jp/ D’Xim model: http://dxim.biz/ Acqua models: http://www.acquamodels.com/ Contract / Premium: CDU: http://www.cdumodels.com/ Awake Models: http://www.awake-models.com/ Bravo Models: http://www.bravomodels.net/ Exiles Hype: http://www.exileshype.com/ Zucca model management: http://www.zucca-models.co.jp/ Image: http://www.image-tokyo.co.jp/classification/men-international/ Donna: http://www.donnamodels.jp/ Number 8: https://numbereight-models.jp/ Satoru: https://satorujapan.co.jp/ How to contact modeling agencies: Before Corona, you could just call the different freelance agencies and make an appointment. However, now, most agencies only accept registrations via email or their website. In your email, try to talk a bit about your personality, previous work, what kind of model/actor you are and send around 5 photos with different types of clothes. Challenges: 1- Visa Securing a visa in Japan can be quite difficult, especially in the modeling industry. Therefore, you might need to work part-time next to modeling while waiting if an agency is willing to sponsor your visa. 2- Being a freelance model in Japan If you are registered as a freelance model, it can be quite difficult to beat the competition. Most companies will first reach for professional modeling agencies before contacting freelance ones. Also, for freelance agencies, if they sponsor some models, they might have priority over others because they need to reach a certain salary in order to keep working as a model. 3- Transportation cost Transportation is very expensive in Tokyo as the city is extremely vast. Most auditions are located in the city center, mostly east of Tokyo. You might end up paying around 10 dollars a day just to get to the audition. Make sure to research whether they are many candidates, the company and the pay. 4- Payment Some agencies will pay only after 1-2 months the job has been completed. Therefore, it can be quite complicated if you have months without jobs and therefore no income. Modeling tips: 1-Speaking Japanese Of course, living in Japan and modeling, speaking Japanese will help you to get more jobs. You don’t necessarily need to speak the language perfectly, but a little bit is essential in order to land more jobs. 2- Photos Having good photos is crucial to increase your chances of landing jobs. Ask someone from your friend circle who is good at photography or DMs some photographers in Tokyo in order to get good photos. 3- Reply to your emails Replying to your emails is very important. It shows that you are taking your job seriously and agents will remember your name. 4- Be available This one can be quite tricky, but the more available you are the more chances you have to land modeling jobs. Some shootings can last 2-3 days and require models to be free for the entire day. 5- Be okay with rejection In the modeling industry, you will get rejected 1000 times, but if you want to really make it a career, just keep going and don’t take it too personal if you don’t land some jobs, it’s part of the game.
