After the discovery of the New World in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, pretty much every major European power began colonizing the continent, including France. But, instead of creating mass settlements in their colony of New France, the French instead just focused on beavers. So, as a result New France was extremely underpopulated, and, after the French and Indian War, New France was carved up by Britain and Spain.
