Simple Flat Lay with one Light Taking flat lay photos is the simplest way of learning photography because you just have to worry about a single background. Try placing items on a single white background and then place a light with a softbox to the side. To add fill light on the opposite side of the frame, place a white bounce board. In my case not only did that bounce board work as a fill light but also blocked unwanted ambient light coming from the window, giving me more control of the lighting within the frame overall. As a starting point, try setting your camera at f3.5, 100 ISO, and adjust the shutter speed until the exposure is balanced. It’s imperative that you use a tripod to avoid any motion blur, for stabilization, and to maintain sharpness. Again, this is meant to be a starting point and camera settings can vary depending on lighting scenarios. Ideally I would recommend using a DSLR or mirrorless camera for best quality but you can start practicing with the camera you already have…your smart phone. You can also invest in some cost effective lights and soft boxes.
