In this video, I am demonstrating a sciatic nerve mobilization technique that I use with some patients. Mobilization of the nervous system can be a helpful strategy for reducing nerve-related pain. In this particular mobilization, the leg is lifted with the knee straight until the first sign of stretch or discomfort appears. Then, the ankle is actively moved through plantarflexion and dorsiflexion to target the sciatic nerve. By moving in a specific pattern, neural mobilization is thought to help the nerve and its branches slide against adjacent tissues, increase blood flow and reduce symptoms. My new book has a comprehensive sciatica rehab program that shows you how to mobilize the sciatic nerve without a partner. Visit www.rehabscience.com/book to learn more.
