Welcome to my channel! In this video I restore a vintage 1950s Tonka Livestock Hauler toy truck that I purchased on eBay for $116.60. This classic Tonka toy restoration turned out to be a neat project, and the transformation from rusty and worn to fully restored was satisfying. If you enjoy toy restorations, vintage Tonka trucks, sandblasting, welding, metal fabrication, and full restoration projects, you’re going to enjoy this one. Full Vintage Tonka Restoration Process As shown in the video, I completely disassemble the Tonka toy truck and remove years of paint, rust, and grime using sandblasting. During the teardown, I discovered that the truck originally started life as a Tonka fire truck, which explains the holes for the beacon light and siren. To restore it as a livestock hauler, we welded the holes closed, using a brass fitting as backing while welding. Bodywork and Metal Repair The trailer needed quite a bit of work. The top of the trailer was caved in, so I repaired it by: Stretching the metal Hammer and dolly work Sanding and smoothing the surface To fix small dents, pitting, and imperfections, I used JB Weld to fill and smooth the damaged areas before finishing. One of the running boards was severely rusted with holes all the way through, so I fabricated a custom replacement running board from sheet metal and welded it into place. Trailer Floor Replacement The original trailer floor was replaced with new wood. I then: Stained the wood Applied two coats of satin clear coat for durability and protection New Parts and Final Assembly Several parts were replaced during the restoration, including: • Tires • Hubcaps • Lights • Landing gear • Decals • Hardware The axles were replaced with plated steel rod, and the entire Tonka truck was powder coated for a durable, long-lasting finish. The final result of this 1950s Tonka Livestock Hauler toy truck looks almost new again. But What Do You Think? I think the finished truck turned out pretty neat, but I’d love to hear what you think.
