Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his intent to resign as leader of the Liberal party and as prime minister. Poilievre spoke about the Liberal leadership race and said "Let's get this decision out of the way. We need certainty now. We cannot wait." He also slammed many of the rumoured Trudeau replacements, including Chrystia Freeland and Mark Carney, saying "They're all Justin Trudeau." "When asked why his "Axe the tax" slogan is still in use with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump threatening Canada and saying it will become the 51st state of the U.S., Poilievre pointed to the carbon tax as one of the leading ways Trump could make it happen. "We have a Canadian government that is threatening even more devastating tariffs on Canada in the form of a carbon tax that will rise to $0.61 a litre. The only person that would like the Canadian carbon tax to go to $0.61 a litre more than the NDP, Liberals — is President Trump because he'll be on the phone with our trucking companies, our factories, our mines. He'd be saying, pick up your billions of dollars and move 50 km south."
