Iran has been consumed by protests, sparked by the death in state custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old who was arrested by Iran's morality police for wearing hijab improperly. The protests have spread throughout the country, with all segments of society taking part and demanding their fundamental human rights and in support of Woman, Life, and Freedom. On October 25th, PAAIA hosted a virtual briefing and panel discussion for members of Congress on the ongoing protests in Iran and steps the U.S. government can take to stand with the Iranian people. Topics discussed were internet freedom and access to technology for the Iranian people, the current state of human rights in the country, and Iran's internal political dynamics. Our esteemed panel featured Holly Dagres, policy analyst on Iranian affairs and Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, Hadi Ghaemi, Executive Director of the Center for Human Rights in Iran, and Mehrzad Boroujerdi, an expert on the domestic politics of Iran and Dean of College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
