I bought the “The Marshalltown” 18 Lennox Throatless Shear on Ebay for around $150 plus shipping. I thought it would make a neat restoration video project. As shown in the video it was manufactured by Marshalltown MFG Company located in Marshalltown Iowa. The Patented date was March 19, 1912. As seen in the restoration video, I completely dismantled the shear before restoring it piece by piece. I sandblasted almost all of the metal parts to remove rust, old paint, and filler. I had to do some serious filling on the casting, as shown in the video. The main housing/body of the shear was powder coated with a high-gloss black finish. From best I can tell, it appears that these shears where black in color originally. I decided to use both cold bluing and hot bluing for some of the parts. Cold bluing is a solution applied at room temperature, whereas hot bluing is done by heating the parts with a torch and then quenching them in oil. After cold bluing, I like to soak the parts in cooking oil for at least overnight. The cutters were, thankfully, in good shape—I looked for replacements but was unsuccessful. I made a new nameplate using printable vinyl. The nameplate artwork was restored with AI software. After applying the decal to the new aluminum plate, I coated it with acrylic clear coat for a more durable finish. I was able to save the old wooden handle and added a brass tube to act as a bushing. The handle was coated with boiled linseed oil. The hardware was nickel-plated, except for two washers that I replaced with new ones. new parts include two washers, the brass handle bushing, and the nameplate. Overall, I think this project turned out great—but what do you think of the restoration video?
