The best aperture for landscape photography is usually going to be F/8. Let me explain… Opening your aperture up as much as possible (usually F/2.8 or F/4 creates beautiful portraits and images where the subject stands out from the background. The lower the aperture, the more out of focus everything except for your subject is. Using a larger aperture, such as F/11 or F/16 results in an image where much more is in focus across the image. So why wouldn’t landscape photographers want to use F/22 for optimal depth of field? Well, your lens has a sweet spot where it is most sharp. And once you close the aperture blades down this far, the lens loses sharpness and image quality quickly. You generally don’t ever want to go above F/16 for this reason.
