In this short video, Dr Samuel J Beran, renowned plastic surgeon in Westchester NY, discusses the technique and benefits of Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. - - - Transcript - - - So a commonly inquired about procedure these days is the Brazilian butt lift. So in the past, say 15-20 years ago, we were doing buttock augmentations with implants. Those implants had a number of problems. While breast augmentation is still commonly performed with implants, and done so quite safely, buttock augmentation is a different short of procedure. And so, surgeons were searching for ways to enhance the shape of the buttock both the size and shape without using implants. What we have follen upon is fat grafting, that’s what we call Brazilian Butt lift. So what we do with that is liposuction fat from one area of the body, most commonly the stomach, inner thighs, love handles, the back. We take that fat, we concentrate it, purify it, and then transplant it into your buttocks. Now because it is your own fat, there is no risk of rejection, when you hear the word transplant like there would be from a kidney from your cousin or a heart from a donor. Because it is your own fat, it does not get rejected. So we take that fat, and then we layer it in layers, superficially into the buttocks. By doing so, we are able to precisely enhance the buttocks. So if someone to come in and they have a little flattening on the sides or a little flattening on the top or bottom of the buttocks, and they just want some small differences in the shape. There are other women who want both an augmentation, and increase in size of the buttocks, and a change in shape, and the fat allows us to do that. So what are the downsides of a Brazilian Butt Lift? Number one, you have to have enough fat for me to take out and transplant somewhere. So if you weigh 100 pounds and you want a big butt from fat grafting, you probably do not have enough fat for me to do so. But if you do have enough fat, one downside to the procedure, is that it is a procedure. It is surgery and because of the transplantation aspect of it, the more you sit on the buttocks, the less of the fat will survive. We know that some of the fat will make it and live and be vascularized in a new blood supply and survive like a normal buttock would, and some of the fat won’t, it just gets absorbed. So we always over correct. But the more you sit on your buttocks for the first 6 week period, less of the that fat will take. So for a lot of patients, that is an issue. Obviously when you go to work and it is hard not to sit. So we have some tricks we do to help that. But in the end, there is definitely an inherent sacrifice to the success of the operation if you have to sit on your buttocks all day at work. But otherwise Brazilian Butt lifts have become quite popular, and is a very effective way to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks.
