China has announced that, five years after relaxing its controversial one-child policy to two, it will now allow three children per married couple, only days after census statistics showed population growth dropping to its weakest rate since the 1950s. China's one-child policy, which was implemented by then-leader Deng Xiaoping in 1980, remained in place until 2016, when the governing Communist Party decided to allow two children per married couple due to concern of a fast ageing population impeding economic development. While the policy modification did result in a little increase in the number of young people in the country, it was regarded insufficient in preventing an oncoming demographic crisis.
